WORKSHOP UPDATES
The responses to these workshops has been overwhelmingly positive and I am, indeed, eager to teach many more of them, but because of a variety of things we learned during the initial workshops, the need to make some adjustments to them as arisen. But the workshops will continue to have a focus of encouraging a writing project from each learner. These changes will be reflected on this web page before March 2, 2015.
Here is a brief description of the changes that are to be made:
1) There were originally three workshops run on two different days of a week. In addition, the three classes were to be offered twice per month.
The plan now is to offer only two workshops, both meeting on one day and only once per month.
2) The original honoraria that were requested varied depending on the "grade" of the class, and this cost difference was mainly due to the length of time each class met.
The plan now is to make both class an hour and a half each with a suggested honorarium of $15 per pupil, regardless of grade.
3)The original plan also called for each grade to at different types of short story and to cover a broad range of story types over time.
The plan now is to cover different types of stories with the younger students: tall tales, myths, fairy tales, fables and so on. The older group will focus more on the various components of the short story: Perspective, Characterization, Setting, Plot and so on.
The registration forms on this page will reflect the changes very soon. It is believed that greater focus of these workshops will help to maximize their usefulness for as many students as possible. The dates of the future workshops for this school year are listed below:
Tuesday, March 17:
10:0-11:30 am for grades 2-6
1:30-3:00 pm for grades 7+
Thursday, April 17:
10:0-11:30 am for grades 2-6

Tuesday, May 12:
10:00-11:30 am for grades 2-6

Essay Writing for Grade 7+
In addition, in preparation of the new school year in September, 2015, there will be four workshops for students going into grade 7 and up. This series will focus on writing essays for two days in the last week of August and two days in the first week of September. It will be somewhat intensive focusing on the essay in general, various types of essays, and the important parts of the essay.
Jr. high and high school students in particular need a broader understanding of the essay because most writing from grade 7 on focuses on essays, and there is no real end to the need for writing them. Even after university, it important to understand essay writing, but IN university, it is critical. The plan for this series of workshops is to offer a broad and stable foundation of understanding of this urgently needed skill--essay writing. Each student will be encouraged to write two different types of essays after the close of the workshops in order to secure and lock down that understanding.
Because of the degree of preparation required for the teacher for this series of workshops, a $20/student honorarium is suggested.
These workshops will meet at 9:30-11:30 on the following dates:
Tuesday, August 25;
Thursday, August 27;
Tuesday, September 1;
Thursday, September 3.
